Livelihood opportunities in the valley of Bandarawela, Sri Lanka are limited for low income community members. Many rely on agricultural work, especially in the tea plantations, which can be arduous with little financial gain. Amba Estate came to the area with the purpose of promoting economic growth through their organic tea plantation, paying fair wages, sharing their profits with their workers, and creating opportunities for growth. Having established its place in the travel market, Amba is now ready to support community cooperatives as a means of better spreading the income of tourism throughout the valley.
Planeterra is working alongside Amba Estate by supporting the initial investment for the first community-led microenterprise that will work in partnership with Amba. Planeterra's catalyst grant covers the equipment, training and setup costs for a group of six women to formally become a chutney co-operative. The chutney will be sold back to Amba Estate for travellers to consume, as well as sold to guests and in markets throughout Sri Lanka. G Adventures travellers began visiting Amba in July 2018. They now have the opportunity to eat the delicious chutneys, meet the women and see how it's made!

I love the organisation that a guide tour with an itinary provides, especially in countries where navigating on your own is tricky. It can be tiring though with the early starts and being busy all of the time, but when you sign up and see the itinerary this is made clear.

A balance between outstanding CEO, driver and assistant, coupled with really well organised and flexible tour visits on the one hand and slightly sub-par accommodation in one or two places on the other.

Arrangements a d guide we?re brilliant. Ash went above and beyond listening, communicating and checking we had all we needed. His knowledge on history and wildlife made the trip all the more special. BUT the hotels let certain standards slip. There were times when the allocation of rooms wasn't fitting for guests who had paid single supplement. The food was poor at the last hotel and service too. Chipped mugs and at one point while we were eating chemicals added in a very random fashion to pool within meters of our seat. The hotel was dirty too. I have photos if you want more detail. The staff could have made it so more welcoming by offering a complimentary drink to guests who could not get into their rooms due to others leaving later than check out time.

I think G Adventures provides an excellent way of visiting a country because of the insight travelers are able to have on the country, it's history, culture and people. I am especially supportive of the sustainable and local-focused approach.

Great trips, amazing guides well organised and local cultural experience.

In hindsight, in Sri Lanka it feels easier to be able to organise the trip yourself. The locations or the hotels was awful meaning it felt isolating, with nothing you can do in the evenings. Es ist eine abwechslungsreiche Route, um das Beste von Sri Lanka in einer Woche zu sehen.

Overall a very good trip, loads to see and the CEO is great. The location of the accommodation on some nights could be a bit closer to the city so we could explore the county',s nightlife on one or two nights

The trip had some faults so I think I'd recommend to someone but say make sure you read all the details and other reviews to make sure it's right for you.
